In recent years, Instagram has been very proactive in rolling out new products that compete directly with its social competitors. In its most recent effort to capture additional market share, Instagram launched IGTV, which has generated a lot of buzz and questions from creators, users and advertisers.

What we know to be true is that IGTV is in its infant stages, and users are adopting it daily. As rates of adoption and users scale, IGTV may very well change the way that TV is consumed for future generations.

What Is IGTV?

As defined by Instagram in a press release, IGTV is “a new app for watching long-form, vertical video from your favorite Instagram creators.” While you can download the IGTV app as a space unto itself, you can also view the videos directly on your Instagram without the extra download. In this digital space, your favorite content creators and brands can produce videos up to an hour long.

One of the most notable aspects of the new platform is the fact that all of the videos are produced vertically. On other platforms, such as YouTube and Facebook, videos are filmed horizontally, requiring users to flip their phones sideways for the best viewing experience. IGTV takes this decision out by requiring that videos be produced to be compatible with vertical screens.

Another notable aspect? Anyone can be a creator. For now, only accounts with 10,000 followers or more have access to the hour-long video capability, but aside from that restriction, any Instagram user can take advantage of the app and its features.
